"THE SOUL WHO SINS SHALL DIE ... " EZEKIEL 18:20
"I WILL PUT ENMITY BETWEEN YOU AND THE WOMAN, AND BETWEEN YOUR OFFSPRING AND HER OFFSPRING; HE SHALL BRUISE YOUR HEAD, AND YOU SHALL BRUISE HIS HEEL." GENESIS 3:15
GOD IS A RIGHTEOUS KING AND JUDGE
In the Garden of Eden God commanded perfect and personal and perpetual obedience of Adam as the representative of all mankind. As the righteous King and Judge, God had the right to demand such obedience from Adam. He promised that if Adam failed, he would die. Adam sinned against God by disobeying him and so God, true to his promise, punished Adam and all mankind with death.
PENALTY OF SIN
As a result of sin human being are under the penalty of sin. We are guilty of breaking God's law in thought, word, and deed. And the penalty of sin is eternal death.
POWER OF SIN
Moreover, we are under the power of sin because we are by nature sinners. There is nothing we can do to deliver ourselves from the power of sin, but we are enslaved by it.
PRESENCE OF SIN
Because we're sinners sin is always present within us. And as long as sin is present with us we cannot dwell in the perfection of holiness with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
GOD IS A GRACIOUS AND LOVING SAVIOR
God did not leave all mankind to perish in the state of misery. But in his grace he has dealt with the penalty and power and presence of sin in the lives of his people.
Justification is God's act of reversing the penalty of sin. Through justification God declares a sinner to be righteous; not because of anything in him or worked in him, but based on the righteousness of Jesus Christ alone. Through faith in Christ God has delivered his people from the condemnation of the law.
Sanctification is the continual work of God by the Spirit to overcome the power of sin in the lives of his people. God graciously gives his people his Spirit who strengthens us and enables us to more and more die unto sin and live unto righteousness.
Glorification is the work of God where he destroys even the presence of sin in the hearts and minds of his people as he brings us to himself with a resurrected body and soul to dwell with him forever.
GLORY OF GOD
God has overcome the penalty, the power, and the presence of sin by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, that he alone may be glorified and enjoyed forever.
