EVANGELIZING THE WORLD

THE GREAT COMMISSION

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. GO therefore and MAKE DISCIPLES of all nations, BAPTIZING them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, TEACHING them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18–20)

The Great Commission includes only one command: "Make disciples" with three descriptions of how the church is to make disciples: "Going," "baptizing," and "teaching." For the church to be faithful to this commission all three of these components need to be properly balanced. An over-emphasis on any to the exclusion of others will result in insufficient discipleship.

Providence understands that the most faithful biblical strategy for evangelism/discipleship ultimately resides in the church. The Westminster Confession of Faith reminds us that the church exists for the "gathering and perfecting of the saints." While Providence encourages a variety of evangelistic approaches, in everything we do, we stress the need for the church.
